The Jane & Finch Youth Centre is located in the diverse, densely populated Jane and Finch neighbourhood of north-west Toronto. Historically, the area has been challenged by gun violence, youth crime, isolation, and stigma. Identified as the number one of thirteen 'at-risk' Toronto communities, Jane and Finch is targeted by several government initiatives aimed at reducing crime and providing employment assistance.
The Jane and Finch Youth Centre is designed to provide an environment in which the community's youth can securely engage in academic and social activities. Envisioned as a neighbourhood beacon, the architecture is focused on providing flexible and uplifting spaces for varied uses. A sound recording studio, study centre, dance studio, and lounge will provide healthy amenities for youth within a collective, collaborative space. A process to integrate community-involved muralists will transform the exterior walls into canvas for art and exhibition. Though a modest project, this centre has great potential to charge the community with new vitality.
